Bhubaneswar: In a bid to draw attention to the derelict condition of the statue of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose set up in at Kalpana Square in the State Capital, the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC)’s Odisha Chapter has filed a police complaint citing lack of maintenance and utter disregard for the freedom fighter.
In a complaint with Capital Police, Odisha State President of IHRC Siba Sundar Swain claimed that the statue of the Indian nationalist was given attention only during special events and left to wallow in neglect in a place of unwanted debris in other times. “Thousands of ministers pass by this way everyday but no one notices the broken statue. The district court, State Museum, BJB College, and most importantly the headoffice of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation are located nearby the Kalpana Square. We found travellers spitting on the statue, the hand of the statue broken into pieces, the tail of Bose’s horse broken and the statue left within debris. It is really disappointing to see this wretched condition of the statue of one of our notable freedom fighters. We often remember him as a great fighter who had quoted “Give me blood, I will give you freedom”. He was a braveheart born in Odisha in the Silver City of Cuttack which gives us the privilege to be proud and honoured. But we only remember him on January 26, August 15 and Subash Bose Jayanti when the elected ministers used to give slogans,” the complaint read.
Swain further urged to reconstruct the statue and maintain it as soon as possible as a mark of respect for the freedom fighter.
