Bhubaneswar: Trouble mounted for DIG Brijesh Kumar Rai after a petition was filed in Odisha Human Right Commission (OHRC), seeking departmental proceedings against the officer and Rs 30 lakh compensation to lady home guard Sairidri Sahoo, who was subjected to physical and mental torture at the hands of officer’s wife, at whose residence she was working.
Right activist Jayant Kumar Das filed the petition, urging the commission to direct the Home department to take legal action against the DIG. The petitioner further requested the Commission to direct concerned authorities to initiate departmental proceedings against the Home Guard DG for suppressing facts.
The activist prayed that commission should direct the authorities to pay the victim a compensation amount of Rs 30 lakh which would be recovered from the salary of the erring DIG.
In his petition, Das stated the lady home guard attempted suicide by laying on a railway track due to alleged mental and physical torture by the wife of DIG Brijesh Kumar Rai.
As a result of this incident, the home guard has lost both her legs and is currently undergoing treatment in a critical condition at a private hospital in Cuttack.
“This raises serious concerns about the exploitation and violation of their human rights. The incident and its aftermath represent a blatant violation of fundamental human rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” the petition read.
It further stated the rights to equality, freedom of speech and expression and protection of life and personal liberty have been compromised in this case.
