Balasore train accident: 28 unclaimed bodies cremated in Bhubaneswar – N.F Times

Bhubaneswar: The 28 unclaimed bodies from the Balasore train accident were cremated at a crematorium in Bharatpur on the outskirts of Odisha capital, last night.

The cremation process, which commenced in the evening, continued throughout the night.

It was carried out by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the presence of East Coast Railway (ECoR) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials.

After the train mishap, the unidentified bodies were kept in special containers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar. Those were yesterday handed over to the BMC authorities.

As many as three carrier vehicles were used to shift the bodies from the healthcare facility to the crematorium.

The DNA samples of the 28 bodies have been stored for matching in future.

The CBI, which has been probing into the accident, had earlier written a letter to the Khordha Collector requesting for the disposal of the unidentified bodies.

As many as 297 passengers were killed in the tragic train mishap at Bahanaga in Balasore on June 2. The AIIMS, Bhubaneswar had received 162 bodies out of which 81 were handed over to the claimants after physical examination while relatives took 53 more bodies after DNA testing.
