Keonjhar: Geetanjali Sweets, located in Jamuhota under Keonjhar municipal limits, was sealed today by the civic body officials following a raid. It was operating sans a trade license and sans adequate provision for fire safety. Sweets were being prepared in its factory in unhygienic conditions.
During the raid, the team ascertained that the well-known vegetarian restaurant and confectionery was adopting unhealthy processes for sweets manufacturing, an official of the municipality said.
According to a source, previously, a dead mouse was found in the large container in which sweets are prepared. A video of this along with the preparation of sweets in unhygienic conditions had gone viral on different social media platforms. Even then, the unhealthy way of preparation was not mended.
The surprise raid was carried out based on a written complaint made by its former manager Smruti Ranjan Mishra. “Mice falling into the containers happen most of the days. The sugar syrup-scalded rodents were being removed and the sweets were sold to customers,” Mishra said.
When contacted, the municipality Executive Officer Madhusmita Samantaray said, “The owner could not produce any food license, building plan approval, fire safety certificate and trade license. We also found a few other violations and accordingly sealed the outlet. We will serve a notice asking to submit essential documents and take a decision as per the prescribed norms, after verifying the papers.”
The raid team comprised personnel from the Town police station and Keonjhar Municipality.
