New Delhi: In addition to being physically stunning, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU’s) greatest strength has always been its capacity to make the viewer feel invested emotionally in its characters, their histories, and even its antagonists. The film ‘The Marvels,’ in which Brie Larson and Iman Vellani play the leading parts, barely gets a portion of it correct. The Marvel is currently playing in theatres everywhere, beginning today, November 10, 2023.
Plot
After making what might be considered an unintended manoeuvre that ends up destabilising the Kree realm, Captain Marvel played by Brie Larson is departing with a sad heart. Now, DarBenn, played by Zawe Ashton, has risen from the dead as the new antagonist, and his goals are to destroy the captain and get vengeance on him. The abilities of Captain Marvel, Monica, and Kamala Khan somehow get intertwined to become ‘The Marvels,’ who then band together to take on DarBenn. This bizarre chain of events is attributed to some type of twisted plot.
Review
As am entertainment, the Marvels are quite endearing. Moments of female camaraderie and friendliness facilitated by director Nia DaCosta are almost adorable. The leading actors’ strong turns also contribute. They lend a childlike freshness and purity to their portrayals that endears them to the viewer.
A formidable antagonist, however, is missing from the picture. DarBenn, the film’s primary enemy, is underwhelming. A formidable foe is what really sets a superhero apart.
Not enough focus was placed on ensuring that the action and emotions were cohesive. The viewers will have a fantastic time and laugh at all the mayhem on television, but it won’t be enough to make them cheer for this heroic group.
With all her personality, Brie makes Captain Marvel a personable character. However, Iman holds her role as Kamala and gives Marvel a lot of freedom with her performance. Teyonah as Monica provides the film with the necessary depth of feeling. It’s entertaining, but the story’s overall lack of commitment is problematic.
However, The Marvels takes a somewhat different path, with Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Marvel bouncing about in time and space in an odd effect that is mostly played for laughs but early on becomes too chaotic for its benefit.
With this film, Korean actor Park Seo-Jun makes his U.S. debut. He makes a dashing Prince Yan. However, his presence is fleeting and not so impactful.
The visual effects and the action scenes are both polished and entertaining. In addition to Nick Fury, the characters Mohan Kapur, Zenobia Shroff, and Saagar Shaikh have some of the most comedic moments throughout the movie.
The Marvels have a safe, generic vibe about them at a moment when Marvel needs to start taking action. However, one can expect to be entertained to see The Marvels, but it doesn’t have the same impact as other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I decided to read the New York Post review for The Marvels to see just how absurd it is.
And…this has to be one of the most hyperbolic, unprofessional reviews I’ve ever read. Also, how dare you insult Stargate?
Also, the review after this is just plot synopsis. That’s it. pic.twitter.com/cgjkUm6Kro
