Rourkela: Two schoolchildren met their watery grave while taking a bath in Koel river in Sundargarh district, today. The deceased were identified as Priyanshu Bhol and Ranjan Padhy. They were studying in a well-known English medium school in Basanti Colony locality of Rourkela.
According to a source, Priyanshu was a student of Class VIII and Ranjan was a student of Class IX. The two students along with two others had gone to the river after their classes were over. They belonged to labour tenement and had gone to take a bath near a railway bridge at Pradhanpali.
Accidentally, the legs of the children slipped deep into the water and they drowned, an eyewitness said.
On being informed by some residents, a team of police and local fire services personnel reached the spot. The bodies of Priyanshu and Ranjan were fished out from the water following a frantic search and after striving for nearly an hour, a member of the fire services team expressed.
Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and launched a probe into the deaths.
Worth mentioning, in another incident earlier in the day, a brother-sister duo drowned in a pond at Jatipur village under Baripada Sadar police limits in Mayurbhanj district.
