Bhubaneswar: A house surgeon of Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Balangir district sustained grievous injuries after he was attacked by a group of miscreants outside the health facility today.
The injured house surgeon, identified as Bishwaranjan Sahu, has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the medical college and hospital, sources said.
“A patient was admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology ward of the medical college and hospital today. House Surgeon Bishwaranjan Sahu attended the patient with utmost care. However, the relatives of the patient had created a ruckus alleging medical neglect. Some miscreants intercepted Sahu and attacked him while he was on his way to hostel after completion of his duty hour at around 5 pm in the evening,” said a student of the medical college.
House surgeon Sahu sustained grievous injuries on his head and other parts of his body. He has been admitted to the ICU of the Surgery ward, he added.
The incident triggered tension at the medical college. Seeking immediate action against the miscreants, students of the medical college locked the main gate of the health facility.
Balangir district Collector Chanchal Rana and SP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo visited the medical college and took stock of the situation.
“We will take stern action against the persons involved in the incident,” said the Collector.
A special police team has been formed to probe the incident and nab the accused, said the SP.
“We have boycotted the work to protest against the attack,” said another house surgeon of the medical college.
