Newlywed woman allegedly killed for more dowries in Odisha’s Nabarangpur; in-laws abscond – N.F Times



Papadahandi: A young woman was allegedly killed by her in-laws for more dowries at Bhimasahi village under Papadahandi police limits in Nabarangpur. The incident came to the fore today after the deceased’s family lodged an FIR in this connection seeking justice.

According to a source, the woman identified as Gita Sethi (24), the daughter of Rama and Sushama from a village under Sadar police limits in Malkangiri district, the son of Banamali Sethi a few months ago. Sudam is a teacher presently working in a school in a nearby village of Nabarangpur district.

The in-laws allegedly earlier started torturing Gita and had been demanding more dowries.

On Friday morning at around 10.00 am, Gita told her younger sister Manasi that she was being severely beaten by her husband. Later after around four hours, her father-in-law informed her family that she had died by suicide by hanging herself with the help of a rope, the source added.

The in-laws of the woman absconded following the FIR and tension was triggered in nearby areas. Besides, the bereaved family launched a Dharna (sit-in) in front of the community health centre (CHC) in Papadahandi by keeping the body.

On being informed, Papadahandi police registered a case and launched a probe into the suspicious death.

The agitation was underway till the time when this report was filed.
