New Delhi: Iranian Revolutionary Guards seized Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries an Israeli-linked cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday trapping 17 Indians in it.
The incident happened days after Iran warned to close the shipping route in its retaliatory action against Israel’s attack on Iran consulate in Syria. A total of 25 crew members are on the ship, out of which 17 are Indians.
“We are aware that a cargo ship ‘MSC Aries’ has been taken control by Iran. We have learnt that there are 17 Indian nationals onboard. We are in touch with the Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels, both in Tehran and in Delhi, to ensure security, welfare and early release of Indian nationals”, said an Indian source.
MCS Aries, the container ship was seized in the Strait of Hormuz by helicopter operation of the Iranian military, said Iranian media. The Italian-Swiss group MSC confirmed the seizure of the vessel. Now there are Iranian authorities on the ship. The agency said it was working with Iranian officials to ensure everyone’s safety.
Tensions have escalated in the Middle East following reports of a possible Iranian attack on Israel. The seizure of ships has been a recurring issue, further fueling the conflict. In response, Israel has issued a direct warning that Iran will face the consequences of seizing the ship.
