NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Publicly Beating of Couple in Uttar Dinajpur of WB – N.F Times

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated suo motu cognizance of a publicly reported assault on a couple by individuals purportedly linked to a political party in Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal.

As per the media reports from June 30, the alleged love affair of the couple was publicly discussed in a Panchayat meeting by agitated villagers before the assailants commenced their attack.

The primary accused known as JCB, reportedly affiliated with the ruling political party of West Bengal, was seen in a widely circulated video violently attacking the couple amidst a crowd of onlookers.

In response, the NHRC has dispatched notices to West Bengal’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, demanding a comprehensive report within one week. This report is expected to detail the police investigation’s progress, the victims’ health status, and any medical assistance provided.

Furthermore, the Commission seeks information on measures the State government intends to implement to prevent future human rights violations by individuals shielded by political connections.

The NHRC has remarked that the heinous and shameful nature of the attack, carried out with apparent impunity, suggests that state authorities have not heeded past lessons or the NHRC’s expressed concerns. The Commission recognizes this event as part of a troubling pattern in West Bengal, where lawless factions have repeatedly victimized the innocent, particularly women.
