A family of four from Pathanamthitta in Kerala, including two children, were killed in a fire at their home on Friday night in Abbassia, Kuwait.
The deceased were identified as Mathew Muzhakkal, his wife Lini Abraham, and their children, Isaac and Erin.
The family had returned to Kuwait after a vacation on Thursday night. Preliminary reports suggest that an AC short circuit caused the fire.
The Indian Embassy in Kuwait offered its condolences for the loss of the four Indian nationals and is coordinating with the family for the prompt repatriation of the bodies. “Embassy @indembkwt expresses its deepest condolences on the tragic demise of Mr Mathews Mulackal, his wife and 2 children due to fire in his flat in Abassiya yesterday night,” it said in a post on X.
“Embassy is in touch with his family and will ensure early repatriation of mortal remains,” it added. Mathews Mulackal is survived by his mother and three siblings.
“Mathew had been employed there for 15 years. His wife worked as a nurse, and their children were enrolled in local schools. They had just ended their vacation, departing Thursday night from Nedumbassery,” a family member reported to the press on Saturday.
This incident reminds the major fire in a Kuwaiti building over a month ago, which claimed the lives of 46 Indian nationals. An electrical short circuit in the guard’s room on the ground floor was cited as the cause. The housing facility was home to 196 individuals, including 175 Indians and others from Thailand, Pakistan, Philippines and Egypt.
