New Delhi: While hearing a series of petitions challenging the NEET-UG 2024 exam, the Supreme Court on July 23 rejected the plea for a re-examination. The court found no definitive evidence warranting a re-test.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, addressed the issue. They acknowledged systemic shortcomings in the examination process.
Chief Justice Chandrachud, while delivering the judgment, highlighted the primary concern presented to the court: the demand for a re-test due to the question paper leak and systemic deficiencies in conducting the exam. The NEET-UG exam was held across 4750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 international cities.
The Supreme Court made several observations: a) The leakage of the NEET UG 2024 paper in Hazaribagh and Patna is a fact. b) The CBI, after taking over the investigation, submitted status reports on July 10, 17, and 21.
The ongoing CBI investigation indicates that approximately 155 students from Patna and Hazaribagh might have benefited from the fraud. c) With the investigation still underway, the Supreme Court requested the central government to determine if any patterns emerged from the data of the 4750 centres in 571 cities. d) The government presented a report from IIT Madras, which the court has reviewed alongside data provided by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
On July 22, the court instructed the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to form a three-member committee to resolve the correct answer for a disputed NEET-UG 2024 question, which had two different answers in separate editions of the NCERT textbooks.
