Lakhs of passengers are expected to experience travel disruptions this weekend following a “massive arson attack” on France’s rail network, occurring just hours before the Paris Olympics’ commencement.

Jean-Pierre Farandou, head of SNCF, France’s national railway operator, described the day as “sad,” emphasizing that families would suffer most from what he termed attacks by “irresponsible individuals.”

The disruption occurred just before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony was scheduled to take place on the River Seine, affecting lakhs of passengers on Friday.

Fires ignited at crucial installations halted trains and led to the cancellation of numerous services, including those designated for transporting sports enthusiasts to the French capital.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has stated that “acts of sabotage” were executed in a “deliberate and coordinated fashion on SNCF’s infrastructure.”

In a statement, the prime minister described the impact on the rail network as “massive and grave,” while expressing his appreciation for the firefighters’ efforts at the scene.

He conveyed his thoughts for all French citizens who were gearing up for their vacations, acknowledging their frustration and thanking them for their patience.

He further mentioned that French security forces are actively seeking the individuals responsible for the sabotage.
