EAM Jaishankar Urges CoC for South China Sea – N.F Times

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of establishing a substantial and effective code of conduct to safeguard the sea lines of communication in the South China Sea on Saturday, which are vital for the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, in light of increasing concerns over China’s maritime assertiveness.

Speaking at the 14th East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, Jaishankar remarked that the EAS process is nearing its two-decade mark, and India is committed to contributing to a more robust EAS process.

He affirmed India’s dedication to maintaining ASEAN unity and centrality through the Act East Policy.

On maritime security, Jaishankar noted that the Sea Lines of Communication (SLOC), traversing the South China Sea, are crucial for the peace, stability, prosperity, and development of the Indo-Pacific region. SLOC refers to the primary maritime routes between ports, utilized for trade, logistics, and naval operations.

He stated that the Code of Conduct should be meaningful and effective, align with international law, and not undermine the legitimate rights and interests of nations not involved in the discussions. Jaishankar’s statements are particularly noteworthy as Wang Yi, his Chinese counterpart, is also present in Vientiane for the summit.

The South China Sea, a major conduit connecting Northeast Asia with Southeast Asia and West Asia, is considered a potential hotspot for global conflict due to its abundant resources.

While China lays claim to the majority of the South China Sea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan have competing claims. Southeast Asian nations are engaged in negotiations with China to establish a code of conduct that could prevent confrontations in the disputed waters.

Additionally, Jaishankar called for de-escalation and restraint in Gaza, affirming that “India continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.”

He also voiced concerns regarding the assaults on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. “India is independently contributing to the safety and security of maritime shipping,” stated Jaishankar.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, he emphasized India’s stance on the significance of dialogue and diplomacy for resolution.

”PM @narendramodi recently engaged President (Vladimir) Putin and President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy. India stands ready to contribute in any manner possible,” he said in a post on X.
