Paris: The Indian men’s hockey team secured a 2-0 victory over Ireland at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium, strengthening their standing in the challenging Pool B of the men’s hockey event at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh (in the 11th and 19th minutes) netted two goals for India, successfully converting a penalty stroke and a penalty corner, thereby clinching a pivotal win for his team.
Previously, India had triumphed over New Zealand with a score of 3-2 in their opening match and followed it up with a 1-1 draw against Argentina.
In contrast to their last two matches, India initiated an aggressive play against Ireland, earning their first penalty corner in the second minute, although Harmanpreet was unable to get past the initial defender.
India gained the lead in the 11th minute with Harmanpreet converting a penalty stroke.
Gurjant Singh executed an impressive interception at midfield, collaborating with Mandeep Singh to penetrate the circle, where a foul by the Irish defence led to the awarded stroke.
In the 19th minute, India obtained consecutive penalty corners, with Harmanpreet scoring on the second attempt.
