New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) is set to deliver its detailed judgment explaining the reasons for not annulling the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) despite allegations of a paper leak and other irregularities today.
The cause list on the apex court’s website indicates that a bench led by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will pronounce the verdict on August 2.
Previously, on July 23, the top court declined to cancel the NEET-UG held on May 5, asserting there was no systemic violation. The court observed that the available data does not suggest a widespread leak of the NEET-UG question paper, which would compromise the exam’s integrity. Nevertheless, it recognized that the paper leak incidents in Hazaribagh and Patna were undisputed.
The National Testing Agency oversaw the NEET (UG) for over 24 lakh candidates across 4750 centres in 571 cities nationwide, including 14 cities abroad, on May 5, 2024. Subsequently, a retest was administered for 1563 candidates, of which only 813 candidates participated.
The SC acknowledged the severe implications that a re-examination would entail for the more than 2 million students who sat for the NEET-UG on May 5. The court clarified that its decision does not preclude action against those who gained admission through unfair means.
Additionally, it directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to reassess the marks due to IIT Delhi’s expert panel’s advice on a disputed physics question, stating that two answers cannot be deemed correct for one question.
During a previous session, the Supreme Court directed the Director of IIT Delhi to form a trio of experts to determine the correct answer. In the hearing regarding the NEET-UG cancellation requests, a petitioner highlighted that 44 candidates received full marks due to an ambiguous question, challenging the National Testing Agency’s choice to grant compensatory marks contrary to its directive for students to adhere to the most recent NCERT textbook.
