New Delhi: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled her country following her resignation on Monday, is reported to remain in India until she is granted political asylum in a third country.

The Indian government has allowed Sheikh Hasina a temporary stay after her government’s collapse in the South Asian nation.

During this time, India will provide comprehensive logistical support while Hasina seeks asylum in the UK, as reported by Daily Sun. Her stay in India is only provisional, pending her transfer to Britain. Hasina, who stepped down on Monday amid unprecedented anti-government protests, is en route to London via India. To date, there has been no confirmation from the UK government about granting political asylum to the former Bangladesh Prime Minister, as per Daily Sun.

Hasina is actively seeking asylum in the UK, accompanied by her sister Rehana, who is a UK citizen. Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known as the “Father of Bangladesh,” and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib, is also Sheikh Hasina’s younger sister. Rehana’s daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a member of the British Parliament for the Labour Party.
