New Delhi: The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a warning to the public about a viral message urging people to download an app for ‘SBI rewards’.
The message, which has been circulating widely on social media platforms, claims to offer rewards from the State Bank of India (SBI) but is actually a scam designed to steal personal information.
In a recent social media post, PIB cautioned users against downloading and installing any APK files from unknown sources.
The bureau emphasized that SBI never sends links or APK files via SMS or WhatsApp for redeeming rewards. The fraudulent message asks recipients to click on a link to download an app, which can compromise their personal and financial data.
PIB’s fact-check advisory highlighted the increasing sophistication of cyber frauds and the importance of being vigilant.
“Did you also receive a message asking you to download & install an APK file to redeem SBI rewards? SBI never sends links or APK files over SMS/WhatsApp. Never download unknown files or click on such links,” the advisory stated.
The public is urged to report such messages and avoid clicking on suspicious links. Cybersecurity experts recommend verifying any offers directly with the official bank channels and being cautious of unsolicited messages
