Perth: India orchestrated a stunning turnaround to establish their supremacy over Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
Dismissing Australia for 104 and gaining a 46-run lead, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul formed a formidable 172-run stand by the close of Day 2, placing India firmly in command with a 218-run advantage. Jaiswal remained not out on 90, while Rahul will resume batting at 62* on Day 3.
Having dismissed India for 150, the Australians failed to capitalize with their batting, collapsing to 104 all out, largely due to a 25-run stand between Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Jasprit Bumrah, acting as India’s captain, emerged as the leading bowler, claiming 5-30 in 18 overs and orchestrating Australia’s downfall in Perth.
The Indian duo, Jaiswal and Rahul, capitalized on the lead, staying calm through the initial overs and weathering the new ball. As the ball aged, they seized scoring chances and found gaps for boundaries. Despite the consistent pressure from Starc, Hazlewood, and skipper Pat Cummins, the Indian openers countered all challenges posed by the ball.
The Australian bowlers, led by Cummins, were unable to dismantle the opening partnership, allowing India to conclude Day 2 at 172 for no loss, with Jaiswal at an unbeaten 90 and Rahul at 62*.
