The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Cyclone ‘Fengal’ in the Southwest Bay of Bengal has moved west-northwestwards and is anticipated to make landfall along the north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts later today.
The Cyclonic Storm ‘FENGAL,’ pronounced ‘FEINJAL,’ progressed west-northwestwards at a speed of 12 km/h over the past six hours and was centred at 0530 IST today, 30th November 2024, near latitude 12.2°N and longitude 81.2°E. It is approximately 150 km east of Puducherry, 140 km southeast of Chennai, 210 km northeast of Nagappattinam, and 400 km north of Trincomalee, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
The storm is expected to move nearly westwards and cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry, as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds ranging from 70-80 km/h, gusting up to 90 km/h, by the evening of 30th November.
