Bhubaneswar: The civic authorities have launched a drive to make the capital city of Odisha a beggar-free place.<\/p>\n
No one will be allowed to seek alms at the traffic signals, bus stands and railway stations in the capital city here under the garb of hawking. Any violation in this regard will invite stern action, said the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) today.<\/p>\n
Members of nomadic communities often gather at traffic signals for begging under the garb of hawking. This unauthorized gathering may cause accidents, said the BMC.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have introduced several steps to make the capital city beggar-free. The civic body has set up a beggar rehabilitation centre (BRC) in the city here. At least 200 beggars can be rehabilitated at the centre. We will provide them food, healthcare and other basic facilities. Steps will be taken to send these people back to their native places,\u201d said BMC Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange.<\/p>\n
The BMC has formed three special teams to keep tab on begging at traffic signals, railway stations and bus stands. These teams, in association with police and NGOs, will rescue the beggars and relocate them to the rehabilitation centre, he added.<\/p>\n
Notably, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs recently praised the BMC for its efforts to make the capital city beggar-free.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
