Paris: The Indian hockey team suffered a 1-2 defeat against Belgium in their Men’s Pool B match on August 1 at the Paris Olympics, showcasing a lackluster defensive performance led by Harmanpreet Singh.

Despite Abhishek Nain’s goal giving India the lead in the second quarter, Belgium managed a comeback with significant force.

India’s goalkeeper PR Sreejesh put forth a valiant effort, but the loss significantly dampened the team’s spirits. Although India has secured a spot in the quarter-finals, this defeat necessitates considerable improvement before their crucial match against Australia. While India’s offense had moments of brilliance, their defense was consistently disappointing. India gave up 11 penalty corners during the game, in contrast to Belgium’s 3, raising concerns about India’s defensive strategy.

The previous three matches already spotlighted India’s offensive line’s lack of finishing prowess, but the game against Belgium casts serious doubts on their defense. At times, it seemed the defense relied entirely on Sreejesh, who continuously saved his team. The first Belgian goal was unchallenged by any Indian player, allowing Florent van Aubel’s solo run and Thibeau Stockbroekx’s subsequent flick to result in a goal, a play typically expected to be intercepted.

Belgium’s second goal occurred in the final moments of the third quarter from a penalty corner. Despite Sreejesh’s consecutive saves, the Indian defense failed to clear the ball, leading to John Dohmen’s easy flick into the net from close range. With the quarter-final looming, India must elevate their performance.

[ad_2] [ad_1] Paris: The Indian hockey team suffered a 1-2 defeat against Belgium in their Men’s Pool B match on August 1 at the Paris Olympics, showcasing a lackluster defensive performance led by Harmanpreet Singh.
