Saudi Arabia: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has blamed Israel for the attack that killed Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh last week in Iran, which has vowed to retaliate.<\/p>\n
A statement issued after an extraordinary meeting of the 57-member bloc on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia said it \u201cholds Israel, the illegal occupying power, fully responsible for this heinous attack\u201d, which it described as \u201ca serious infringement\u201d of Iran\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n
The Gambia\u2019s Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, whose country chairs OIC, said Haniyeh\u2019s \u201cheinous\u201d assassination and the ongoing war in Gaza could lead to a regional conflict.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe aggression and violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran by the assassination of a political leader on its soil is an act that cannot be viewed in isolation,\u201d Tangara said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis heinous act serves only to escalate the existing tensions potentially leading to a wider conflict that could involve the entire region.\u201d<\/p>\n
Iran and Palestine had called for the OIC meeting in the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah. The bloc describes itself as the collective voice of the Muslim world.<\/p>\n
Host Saudi Arabia also said Haniyeh\u2019s assassination was a \u201cblatant violation\u201d of Iran\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n
The kingdom\u2019s deputy foreign minister, Waleed al-Khereiji, said his country rejects \u201cany violation of the sovereignty of states or interference in the internal affairs of any country\u201d.<\/p>\n
Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for Haniyeh\u2019s killing in Tehran last week, but the Israeli government has not confirmed or denied responsibility.<\/p>\n
Iran has promised to retaliate, threatening \u201charsh punishment\u201d for Israel. But the United States and other Western countries have been calling for de-escalation.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said several OIC members agree with Washington that escalation would only exacerbate the continuing crises in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would hope that at that OIC meeting the same thing happens that we have been trying to effectuate throughout the last week, which is that all parties that have a relationship with Iran impress upon Iran \u2013 the same way that we\u2019ve been impressing upon the government of Israel \u2013 that they shouldn\u2019t take any steps to escalate the conflict,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n
He added that regional escalation could jeopardise the prospects of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
