This high-level engagement comes after a period of strained relations following President Muizzu\u2019s election in November 2023. The new administration, known for its pro-China leanings, had initially requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the country. However, both nations reached a compromise, with Indian military staff being replaced by civilians by May 10, 2024.<\/p>\n
During the ceremony, President Muizzu reaffirmed his administration\u2019s commitment to strengthening ties with India. He highlighted the economic benefits of the completed projects and their contribution to the nation\u2019s prosperity. The president also expressed optimism about the future of Maldives-India cooperation.<\/p>\n
Minister Jaishankar\u2019s visit, scheduled from August 9-11, is seen as a crucial step in reinforcing India\u2019s \u2018Neighbourhood First\u2019 policy and its vision of \u2018Security and Growth for All in the Region\u2019 (SAGAR). The visit aims to explore avenues to enhance bilateral relations further.<\/p>\n
