Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has ordered Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former head of Kolkata\u2019s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital \u2013 where a doctor was raped and murdered last week \u2013 to go on long leave.<\/p>\n
Dr Ghosh \u2013 under scrutiny for comments seen as victim-blaming and failing to ensure staff safety \u2013 resigned Monday, declaring \u201cthe girl who died was like my daughter\u2026 as a parent, I am resigning\u201d, but was re-appointed as Principal of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital 24 hours later<\/p>\n
The court, which also asked tough questions of the state\u2019s handling of this horrific crime, including keeping the doctor\u2019s parents waiting for information and even protecting Dr Ghosh, observed that the tragic circumstances of the young woman\u2019s death did not seem to have much affected him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Principal is the guardian of all doctors working there\u2026 if he doesn\u2019t show any empathy who will show? He should be at home not working anywhere\u2026\u201d a division bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam said, also wondering how it happens that a government lawyer is arguing for Dr Ghosh.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026 this Principal will not function\u2026 let him go on long leave. Otherwise we pass an order,\u201d the court said when told Dr Ghosh quit and was posted to a second institution in almost the same breath.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy Do You Protect Him\u2026\u201d
\u201cNo man is above the law\u2026\u201d the court thundered, \u201cHow did he step down and then be rewarded with another responsibility?\u201d The court, which demanded the police\u2019s case diary by 2 pm, also directed Dr Ghosh\u2019s resignation letter be filed, observing, \u201c\u2026 we want to see what he has written.\u201d<\/p>\n
