Assam: Facing massive backlash, Assam\u2019s Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Wednesday cancelled its advisory to female doctors and other staffers asking them to \u2018avoid going alone\u2019 to \u2018isolated places\u2019 at night.<\/p>\n
The advisory sent by Dr Bhaskar Gupta, the institute\u2019s principal cum chief superintendent, in view of the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata\u2019s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, faced protests from students, who called for enhanced security measures in the hospital.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe advisory issued earlier stands cancelled. A new one will be issued soon in this regard,\u201d Gupta said, adding that its aim was to ensure the safety and security of women doctors, students, and all healthcare workers on the campus.<\/p>\n
The original advisory stated that female medics, students, and staff, should, as much as possible, \u2018avoid situations where they are alone.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026refrain from leaving hostel or lodging rooms during night hours unless absolutely necessary, with prior information to the concerned authority. They must avoid going off-campus during late or odd hours,\u201d Dr Gupta wrote in the now-cancelled advisory.<\/p>\n
In it, he had also written that, \u201cAll hostel boarders should abide by the hostel norms and regulations laid by the institute and administration. Be cautious and avoid associating with individuals who appear unknown or are suspicious in nature. Always ensure you have a means of making emergency contact in case of urgent situations.\u201d<\/p>\n
During their duty hours, doctors should be \u2018well-composed emotionally,\u2019 \u2018remain alert\u2019 and \u2018graciously\u2019 interact with members of the public to avoid \u2018unnecessary attention\u2019 from \u2018unscrupulous people,\u2019 it had suggested.<\/p>\n
The Junior Doctors\u2019 Association (JDA), however, said that the advisory made students feel \u2018deeply saddened and ashamed.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is outrageous and fails to address the key issues pertaining to SMCH,\u201d the association noted.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
