Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday claimed that former President Donald Trump would push through a national abortion ban if he won the presidential polls. Trump called it a lie but struggled to clearly state his views on abortion, which is one of Harris\u2019s strongest electoral issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not signing a ban,\u201d Trump countered Harris, adding \u201cthere is no reason to sign the ban because we\u2019ve gotten what everyone wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the tense exchange on abortion at the presidential debate, it appeared that both the candidates\u2019 microphones were unmuted and viewers could hear both candidates speaking interchangeably.<\/p>\n
During her argument on reproductive rights, Harris criticised what she called \u201cTrump abortion bans\u201d. The Democratic presidential nominee said Trump\u2019s policies on abortion had no exception for rape or incest, which she called \u201cimmoral\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne does not have to abandon one\u2019s faith or deeply held beliefs to agree with the government and Donald Trump, certainly, should not be telling a woman what to do with her body,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n
The Indian-American also stressed that she would \u201cproudly\u201d sign a bill into law reinstating the protection of Roe vs Wade if she was elected the US president.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the American people believe that certain freedoms \u2014 in particular the freedom to make decisions about one\u2019s own body \u2014 should not be made by the government,\u201d the Vice President said.<\/p>\n
Trump responded by claiming that in some states, babies were killed after they were born. To this, the moderator interjected, saying, \u201cThere is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it is born.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump defended his decision to support the six-week abortion ban and said that \u201cDemocrats are radical\u201d in their abortion policies. Trump also attacked Kamala Harris\u2019s vice presidential pick, Tim Walz, for his stance on abortion, claiming he supported \u201cexecution after birth\u201d.<\/p>\n
The former president also distanced himself from his running mate JD Vance\u2019s claim that Trump would veto a federal abortion ban. \u201cWell, I didn\u2019t discuss it with JD, in all fairness,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t mind if he has a certain view, but I don\u2019t think he was speaking for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
