{"id":5247,"date":"2023-08-17T12:40:35","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T12:40:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thenftimes.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/17\/attack-on-churches-in-pakistan-over-100-arrested-case-registered-against-600-suspects-n-f-times\/"},"modified":"2023-08-17T12:40:38","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T12:40:38","slug":"attack-on-churches-in-pakistan-over-100-arrested-case-registered-against-600-suspects-n-f-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thenftimes.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/17\/attack-on-churches-in-pakistan-over-100-arrested-case-registered-against-600-suspects-n-f-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Attack On Churches In Pakistan: Over 100 Arrested; Case Registered Against 600 Suspects &#8211; N.F Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Lahore: Pakistani authorities have arrested more than 100 people in connection with the unprecedented mob attack on 21 churches of the Christian community in Punjab province even as the government on Thursday ordered a high-level probe into the riots over blasphemy allegations.<\/p>\n<p>Scores of churches and homes belonging to Christians in Jaranwala tehsil of Faisalabad district, some 130 km from the provincial capital, were burnt down on Wednesday by a mob enraged over reports that two Christians had desecrated the Quran.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Punjab government, over 100 people, including activists of the extremist group Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), have been taken into custody for attacking homes and churches of Christians over the alleged blasphemy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPunjab police have arrested over 100 miscreants involved in attacks on churches and houses of the minority community in Jaranwala. A case has been registered against 600 suspects under terrorism and blasphemy charges,\u201d Punjab caretaker information minister Amir Mir said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said peace has been restored in the area and a heavy contingent of police and Rangers has been deployed outside churches and homes of the minority Christian community.<\/p>\n<p>Mir said police foiled many attempts aimed at damaging various buildings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe chief minister has ordered a high-level investigation into the matter and those involved in this heinous crime will not escape justice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The district administration has imposed section 144 for seven days, prohibiting all kinds of assembly, except for events organised by the government in Jaranwala.<\/p>\n<p>All educational institutions, markets and business establishments remained closed in Jaranwala on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Christian community leaders in Faisalabad on Thursday assessed the damage to their holy places and houses in Jaranwala.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 21 churches have either been torched or vandalised over false accusations of blasphemy, they said, adding that copies of hundreds of Bible were set on fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-one churches and 35 houses of Christians including a pastor\u2019s residence were either burnt down completely or ransacked by the mob on Wednesday,\u201d Pak Centre for Law and Justice Napoleon Qayyum told PTI on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said although peace has been restored in the area due to the heavy deployment of police, Christians fear that Islamists might strike again.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,000 policemen and two companies of Pakistan Rangers have been deployed in Jaranwala following Wednesday\u2019s riots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the Christians left the area on Wednesday to save their lives and they will return only once action is taken against those who are involved in attacks on churches and Christian houses,\u201d Qayyum said.<\/p>\n<p>He said since Shaukat Masih, a Christian, was the Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Jaranwala, some local Muslims had an issue with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the pretext of blasphemy, they first moved to the AC\u2019s office to attack him. Mr Masih was lucky to escape,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad the authorities in Pakistan brought those involved in attacks on Christians and their holy places to justice in the past, the Jaranwala incident might have been averted,\u201d Qayyum said, demanding the government rein in radical TLP members who are on the forefront to target minorities in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>The Christian families who fled their homes spent the night in the open fields to save themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn reports that an enraged mob is heading towards our houses in Isa Nagri, my neighbours and I left and took refuge in open fields far from our area and spent the night over there,\u201d a member of the Christian family told PTI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t take our chances to return to our homes till the government provides us security and arrests those who attack our houses and holy places,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The incident sparked nationwide outrage from all political parties, civil society and the media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply concerned that churches and homes were targeted in response to reported Quran desecration in Pakistan,\u201d US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>He said that while the United States backed free expression, \u201cviolence or the threat of violence is never an acceptable form of expression,\u201d Geo News reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge Pakistani authorities to conduct a full investigation into these allegations and call for calm,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Islamabad police on Thursday formed a \u201cMinority Protection Unit\u201d (MPU) comprising 70 policemen for the \u201cprotection of minority places of worship and communities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the police said, \u201cSeventy jawans (policemen) have been posted in the \u2018Minority Protection Unit\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move came after Christian leaders strongly condemned what they called police inaction during the whole episode.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>[ad_2]<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ad_1] Lahore: Pakistani authorities have arrested more than 100 people in connection with the unprecedented mob attack on 21 churches of the Christian community in Punjab province even as the government on Thursday ordered a high-level probe into the riots over blasphemy allegations.
