Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the administration to ensure safe return of 35 Odia workers reported to be held captive in Laos.
As per the direction of Chief Minister, the Labour Commissioner of Odisha has taken up the issue with Indian embassy at Laos. The Embassy authorities have informed that they are in touch with the workers and all necessary steps will be taken for their safe return to India.
Earlier, there were reports that at least 35 workers from Kendrapara district have been held captive by their employer in Attapeu province of Laos.
The incident came to fore recently when the workers sent videos to their family members describing their plight in the Southeast Asian country.
The workers had gone to Laos around six months ago through a labour contractor who promised them of arranging good jobs.
The family members of the workers had approached the Labour department yesterday and urged it to take the necessary steps for their safe return.
