Bhubaneswar: A 17-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide in Odisha’s Balasore district yesterday night after his family did not buy a smartphone for him during Dussehra.

The deceased is the only son of Sunil Swain of Shantinagar village under Bhograi block in Balasore.

The boy reportedly got addicted to Free Fire mobile game soon after he completed his matriculation. He had earlier sought a costly smartphone from his parents, who work as labourers in Bangalore.

The boy was staying with his parents in Karnataka capital and he had recently come to their native place for Dussehra celebration, villagers said.

The boy allegedly died by hanging himself after his parents could not arrange the money to buy a good quality mobile phone, they added.

The parents of the deceased boy along with the villagers, meanwhile, urged the government to ban the Free Fire mobile game for children in the state.
