Jagatsinghpur: OMVD traffic inspector identified as Prasanta Kumar Mohapatra, working in the office of RTO Jagatsinghpur, was arrested today after a total unaccounted cash of around Rs 6.79 lakh found in his possession. He was intercepted yesterday by a team of Odisha Vigilance sleuths.
Acting on information from a reliable source regarding the collection of huge cash by the traffic inspector as illegal gratification from different sources, the team kept a close watch over the movement and activities of Mohapatra. Accordingly, he was intercepted at Tarini Chhaka in Biribati near Cuttack.
The OMVD official was proceeding to Bhubaneswar in a luxurious car (bearing registration number OD-02 CP-5414). During interception, a sum of Rs 4,34,720 (suspected to be ill-gotten cash) was recovered from him, which he could not account for satisfactorily, a Vigilance press release mentioned.
The entire cash was later seized. Soon after the interception, simultaneous searches were conducted at the residential house of Mohapatra at GL-78 in VSS Nagar of Bhubaneswar and a rented house at Tarapur in Raghunathpur locality of Jagatsinghpur district from disproportionate assets (DA) angle.
During the search, cash of Rs 2,19,265 from his residential house at VSS Nagar in Bhubaneswar and cash of Rs 25,500 from a rented house at Tarapur in Raghunathpur were unearthed.
A Cuttack Vigilance PS case (No-02, dated 9.2.2024, under Section 13 (2) r/w 13(1) (b) of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 has been registered in this connection.
Mohapatra was forwarded to court and the detailed probe of the case is underway.
