Bhubaneswar: Organ donation done to save the lives of others is certainly a noble cause. The sacrifice and courage of such people will be recognised. The organ donors’ last rites will be performed with full State Honors as a token of recognition, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced today.

The Chief Minister hoped that recognition of organ donation would help create a positive and widespread awareness among people. It will also inspire many in our society to donate their organs and save the lives of others. “The families of brain-dead persons at times make courageous decisions and consent to cadaver organ donation (COD), thereby playing a significant role in saving lives,” the CM stated.

Worth mentioning, the Odisha Government previously set up the State Organ & Tissues Transplant Organization (SOTTO) in 2019 to facilitate hassle-free organ transplants in the State.

Suraj Award was instituted in 2020 to encourage organ donation among people. The award was named after a deceased accident victim named Suraj, who belonged to Bhanjanagar of Ganjam district. After the victim became brain-dead in a fatal road mishap, his family consented to donate his organs.

The youth could save the lives of at least six persons through cadaver organ donation.
