New Delhi: The Centre has extended the tenure of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Kumar Deka by one year on Monday. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension until June 30, 2025, or until further orders.

Deka, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, is renowned for his expertise in counter-terrorism and his significant contributions to national security. His extension comes as a recognition of his pivotal role in combating various security challenges facing the nation.

Throughout his career, Deka has been instrumental in tackling northeast insurgencies and dismantling terrorist organisations such as the Indian Mujahideen. He has served as the joint director (operations) for the Intelligence Bureau and has been at the forefront of countering Islamic extremism in India for the past two decades.

Under Deka’s leadership, the IB has made substantial progress in containing left-wing extremism, with Maoist activities now largely confined to the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. His tenure has also seen intensified efforts against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, including investigations into the 26/11 Mumbai attacks that brought culprits to justice.
