Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Ursula von der Leyen on her re-election as President of the European Commission for a second term on Friday. PM Modi is keen to further enhance the strategic partnership between India and the European Commission.
In a social media post, PM Modi stated, āCongratulations, @vonderleyen, on your re-election as President of the European Commission. I look forward to collaborating to bolster the India-European Commission Strategic Partnership for the global good.ā
EU leaders convened in Brussels on June 28 to decide on the blocās leadership for the coming five years. The summit nominated von der Leyen for a second term as European Commission President, Antonio Costa as President of the European Council, and Kaja Kallas, the Estonian Prime Minister, as High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
Despite these challenges, von der Leyen was confirmed for her nomination. She expressed her gratitude, saying, āI am deeply grateful to the leaders for endorsing my nomination for a second term. It is a great honour.ā
The European Parliament must still approve the appointments of von der Leyen and Kallas. However, Costaās appointment as Council President is confirmed by his prior role, with his term beginning on December 1.
