New Delhi: Following the tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of three civil service aspirants, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) initiated a crackdown on coaching centres.
On Sunday, the MCD sealed the basements of 13 coaching centres in Rajinder Nagar, including Rau’s IAS Study Circle, for flouting regulations.
The previous evening, Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Navin Dalwin from Ernakulam in Kerala perished when Rau’s IAS Study Circle’s basement flooded during heavy rainfall.
MCD officials declared that basements are only legal for storage and parking, not commercial activities. Acting on Mayor Shelly Oberoi’s orders, a civic body team enforced these regulations at the location.
Additionally, basement library owners instructed students to leave due to the intensified enforcement against the misuse of basements contrary to building bylaws.
Previously, Mayor Oberoi had instructed MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar to rigorously enforce the prohibition of commercial activities in basements and to probe any MCD official’s involvement in the Old Rajinder Nagar incident.
