Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Monday appointed senior IAS officer N. Muruganandam as the Chief Secretary, succeeding Shiv Das Meena.

Shiv Das Meena has been named Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Real Estate Regulatory Authority, as per a Government Order.

Muruganandam, who will be the 50th Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, is a 1991 batch IAS officer. Known for his close association with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, he is a key member of the Chief Minister’s core administrative team.

Muruganandam, who has a BE in computer science and an MBA from IIM, has previously served in several high-ranking roles within the Tamil Nadu government, including as the state’s finance secretary under the current administration. His wife, Supriya Sahu, is the Principal Secretary of the Health Department in the Tamil Nadu government.

The timing of Muruganandam’s appointment is noteworthy, coming just before Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s scheduled tour of the US, set to begin on August 22. Following the reassignment of Shiv Das Meena to the chairmanship of the Tamil Nadu Real Estate Regulatory Authority (TNTERA) on Sunday, there has been much speculation about the new Chief Secretary. Meena, who is expected to retire in October, has been appointed to lead TNRERA for a five-year term.

The Housing and Urban Development Department’s orders indicate that Shiv Das Meena’s appointment as TNRERA chairperson was made after thorough deliberation and based on the recommendation of a selection committee established by the state government. K.Gnanadesikan, the former chairperson, completed his tenure in February 2024. Meena succeeded V.Irai Anbu as the 49th Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, who retired in June 2023.
