Jajpur: Fresh political tension erupted in Dharmasala block of Jajpur district following an alleged violent confrontation involving supporters of sitting MLA Himanshu Sahu and persons reportedly linked to former MLA Pranab Balabantaray. The incident, which took place near Panturi on Saturday, has prompted police investigation and heightened security in the area.
According to sources, a group of supporters of MLA Himanshu Sahu were returning through the Panturi area when they were allegedly confronted by a group of men and women who reportedly emerged from a farmhouse said to be associated with the former legislator. The complainants alleged that the attack was sudden and forced them to flee to save their lives.
The complaint lodged at Jenapur Police Station names several individuals and alleges criminal intimidation, unlawful assembly and attempt to cause harm. However, police officials clarified that all allegations are subject to verification and that the investigation is in its preliminary stage.
Supporters of the sitting MLA further alleged that after they left the spot, damage was caused to vehicles and property, and attempts were made to shift the blame onto them. These claims, too, are being examined as part of the probe.
The incident has brought to the fore growing political rivalry in Dharmasala, particularly after recent electoral developments in the constituency. Residents reported panic in the area following the incident, with movement briefly affected.
Jenapur police reached the spot soon after receiving information and initiated an enquiry. A senior police officer said statements of witnesses are being recorded and available video footage from nearby locations is being examined.
“We have received a complaint from one side and are conducting a thorough investigation. All facts will be verified before taking any legal action,” the officer said.
Sources said no arrests had been made till late evening. Police added that if evidence supports the allegations, strict action will be taken in accordance with law.
Meanwhile, persons associated with the former MLA have reportedly denied the allegations and described them as politically motivated. No official counter-complaint was confirmed at the time of filing this report.
The administration has appealed to all political parties and supporters to maintain restraint and avoid any action that could disturb public order. Police have intensified patrolling in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.
