Major upgradation to GIS Substation at Captive Power Plant-I of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant to optimize operational efficiency

Rourkela : In order to provide higher reliability and flexibility, a major project of converting Air Insulated System (AIS) Sub-station to technologically advanced Gas Insulated System (GIS) Sub-station at Captive Power Plant-1 (CPP-1) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) is going on in full swing. The critical technological upgradation which began in August, 2021 will help CPP-I optimize its operational efficiency.
It is noteworthy that, the 33KV sub-station of CPP-1, which was installed in late 1950s, consists of 50 panels, synchronized generators and multiple feeders distributed in 3 sections on double bus power arrangement. To take care of technical obsolescence and to enhance the reliability and stability of the critical and vital Category-1 power system in RSP, the 33KV system is being upgraded by replacement of the seven decades old sub-station with a renovated and upgraded control room equipped with latest protection and control systems. The project being a brown field project, execution of the project is being carried out without affecting the production of different units of RSP.
Notably, the Rs. 22.5 Crore technological updation project is being executed in the vital installation in multiple phases with the initiative of the Electrical team of CPP-1 and under guidance of Mr. B Sunil Kartha, Chief General Manager (Power). The execution of the project is being carried out in close co-ordination with Power Distribution Department and other departments of the plant. The contract is being executed by Messers Schneider. Till date 35 feeders have been made ready and all the 3 running generators of 25MW each have been synchronized with the new GIS system. The last generator was synchronized on 3rd September, 2022. The total project is expected to be commissioned by the end of December 2022.
