Bhubaneswar: The authorities of Jagannath temple at Odisha’s Puri town performed the Bada Mahasnana ritual as bloodstains were found at the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine following a tussle between two servitors today afternoon.

Suar servitor Babuli Pradhan and Patribadu servitor Madhab Patri got engaged in a quarrel over sharing of Pitha (cake) Prasad at the sanctum sanctorum soon after the completion of Dipahar Dhoopa of the presiding deities, sources said.

Pradhan sustained injuries on his face after he and Patri exchanged blows during the quarrel. Later, bloodstains were spotted at the sanctum sanctorum of the 12th century shrine, sources added.

The authorities of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) soon performed the Bada Mahasnana (sanctification ritual) before the performance of other routine rituals of Lord Jagannath and his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Due to this, some routine rituals of the deities got delayed and the public darshan was halted for quite some time, sourced said.

The injured servitor was rushed to a hospital in the Holy Town.

On being informed, the police have launched a probe into the incident and questioned the two servitors, said a source.
