Bhubaneswar: A car allegedly ran over a child sleeping on footpath in Unit-II area of Odisha capital, last night.
The victim sustained critical injuries in the accident and was rushed to the Capital Hospital for treatment.
According to reports, the driver of the car lost control over the vehicle near the slum behind Odisha Legislative Assembly, veering onto the footpath and eventually coming to a stop after colliding with a wall.
Following the accident, the driver and two other occupants of the car fled the scene. It is being suspected that they had consumer liquor.
Tension ran high in the area as slum dwellers detained the car and demanded compensation for the injured child’s family.
On being informed, the Capital Police reached the place and started an investigation into the matter.
A resident of the slum recounted the incident, saying, “The car veered onto the footpath and collided with the boundary wall. Upon hearing the noise, we saw a man in a black T-shirt and two others in white T-shirts exiting the vehicle. They ran away. Subsequently, we noticed a young boy limping toward the middle of the road and collapsing. The car had struck the child.”
