Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly session was adjourned till 11:30 am on Tuesday due to a commotion caused by the Opposition BJD and Congress, who were insisting on a discussion regarding the caste census.
At the start of the day’s session, members of the BJD and Congress entered the well of the House. Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, and BJD MLA Adhiraj Panigrahi, among others, were observed vehemently protesting near Speaker Surama Padhy’s podium, calling for a caste census. Their attempts to ascend the podium led the Speaker to suspend the session until 11:30 am.
Similarly, on Saturday, the Opposition disrupted the proceedings, claiming that ST, SC, and OBC candidates were not receiving their rightful quotas in admissions to technical institutes, as well as MBBS and BDS courses, which resulted in the adjournment of the House until 4 pm.
With medical college admissions set to begin on August 29, BJD and Congress MLAs contended that SC and ST categories are only being allotted a 20% reservation, rather than their entitled 38.75%, and that OBCs, who make up 54% of the state’s population, are receiving no reservation.
When the Assembly reconvened at 4 pm, Congress members exited the chamber and organized a sit-in near the Mahatma Gandhi statue within the Vidhan Sabha complex, demanding equitable quotas for all categories and a caste census in Odisha.
