Bhubaneswar: Veteran Odia lyricist Binodini Devi died today following a prolonged illness. She was 86.
Binodini Devi was bedridden for months after a massive brain stroke. She was undergoing treatment at her son’s residence in Angul district.
Family sources said that the last rites of the veteran artiste will be held at Swargadwar in Puri.
Binodini Devi was an approved lyricist of Akashwani, Cuttack. She rose to fame for writing lyrics in Odia cinema. She was credited with some of popular lyrics including Rakata Talamala Khaira Panchapal from the movie ‘Mala Janja’, Kalia Asila Bhai Kalia Asila, Se ta Bhakata Bhabare Bandha from ‘Shree Jagannath’, Nirimakhi Kuanri Mu from ‘Tapoi’ and Nara Hey Manji Potila from ‘Jay Jagannath’.
Veteran musical maestro of the Odia film industry, late Akshay Mohanty, had offered her an opportunity to write songs for ‘Mala Janha’ movie. In the later period, she wrote lyrics for other films.
Born in 1937 at Tigiria area in Cuttack district, Binodini Devi was also a prolific litterateur. Her works like ‘Khokatiye Khokitiye’ (compilation of children’s songs), ‘Amruta’ (devotional song compilation), ‘Tiki Tiki Naali Kainch’ (children’s song compilation), ‘Ei Kala Mora Kalank’ (modern song collection) were some of the most talked about.
