Rairangpur: A young girl died as a scooter on which she was travelling was hit by a speeding auto-rickshaw near Bhalubasa-Ranibandha locality under Rairangpur Rural police limits on Ranchi-Vijayawada NH-220 in Mayurbhanj district, today.
The deceased was identified as 20-year-old Sumitra Mahanta from Sakiladihi under Adarsh Town police limits of Rairangpur. Sumitra was working in a private company in Keonjhar district.
According to a police source, Sumitra was on her way to her home from Keonjhar for Dussehra Puja vacation when she met with an accident. The auto-rickshaw was going from Rairangpur to elsewhere in the district. Later, Sumitra was rescued by some locals and immediately taken to a health facility in critical condition. However, doctors at the hospital declared her ‘brought dead’.
On being informed, Rairangpur Rural police reached the accident site and initiated a probe into the road mishap. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and a report is awaited.
Worth mentioning, two persons from Odisha were killed on the spot and five others sustained grievous injuries in a road mishap as the car in which they were travelling hit a truck from behind at Narayangarh on NH-16 in neighbouring West Bengal, today forenoon.
