Nuapada: Panic gripped Katingpani village under Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Nuapada district as a leopard mauled a cow to death after killing an eight-year-old boy of the locality.
According to reports, the leopard attacked the cow at a cowshed of one Arjuna Dharua of the village, late last night. The leopard tried to drag the cow away from the place but failed in doing so. However, the cow sustained critical injuries and died in front of the house.
On Monday evening, the minor boy namely Dambarudhar Dharua was playing near his house, during which the leopard picked him up and later mauled him to death. The deceased’s body was recovered by Forest Department personnel from the sanctuary.
“As per provisions of the State government, a compensation of Rs 6 lakh will be given to the deceased’s family. We will propose to the Government through Department higher-ups for adequate fencing and solar lighting in the nearby areas to prevent animal intrusion,” said Nuapada Wildlife Ranger Gajendra Pal Singh Mathur.
