Bhubaneswar: At least four persons died and over a 100 people have fallen ill following an outbreak of diarrhoea in Odisha’s Rourkela city.

The deceased have been identified as Glasan Samant (38) and Phultoli Goud (23) of Panposh and Ahalya Nayak (70) and Nanaci Dubey (75) of Udit Nagar in the Steel City.

“Four persons, including three women, have died of diarrhoea in Rourkela in last two days,” said a source in Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH).

At least 102 diarrhoea patients from various places of the Steel City have been admitted to the RGH, sources said.

Diarrhoea cases have been reported from Panposh, Udit Nagar, Chhend and various other places in Rourkela and its outskirts. Majority of the cases have been reported from slum areas of the city, sources added.

However, the Health department officials are yet to find out any specific reason behind the diarrhoea outbreak in Rourkela.

“Samples have been sent for laboratory tests. We are arranging additional beds to treat the diarrhoea patients,” said RGH Director (in-charge) Sudharani Pradhan.
