Kite string: Man critical after his throat gets slit by Manja thread in Odisha’s Cuttack – N.F Times

Cuttack: A man sustained grievous injuries as a kite string made with Manja (typical glass powder-laced glue) slit his throat on Kathajodi bridge in Cuttack City, early today morning. It is the fourth incident that took place this winter season during Makar Sankranti when kites are flown rampantly.

The victim man has been identified as Akshaya Mohapatra from Kalyan Nagar locality of the city.

According to a source, the mishap occurred while the commuter was passing over the bridge and was on his way from his residence in Kalyan Nagar to Bhubaneswar riding a two-wheeler for some personal work. He fell on the ground after being entangled by the Manja thread and had profuse bleeding in the incident. Some locals rescued the man and immediately admitted him to hospital for treatment.

“The health condition of the patient (Akshaya) is out of danger now,” a doctor treating him said.

In a bid to prohibit the use of Manja thread for flying kites, Cuttack Police continued its drive for the past several days and has carried out check searches, Zone VI ACP Swastik Panda previously said.

“We are giving more emphasis to the creation of awareness along with enforcement of the norms. Acting on a directive of the DCP Sir, we started this drive on January 12. Initially, we identified the localities where kite flying is being done rampantly such as Kathajodi and Ring Road. Through the PCR vans with public address systems, we made people aware of the harms of Manja threads. On January 13, we raided several shops selling the prohibited threads,” the ACP had stated when contacted.
