Cuttack: A woman was attacked today by a youth with a sharp weapon over alleged past enmity at Nehru Palli locality under CRRI police limits in Cuttack and the victim succumbed to her injuries.

The 50-year-old deceased woman was identified as Bharati Sahoo. The accused has been identified as Munna, who has several cases pending against him at different police stations.

According to a source, the accused had an altercation with Bharati in the evening. Things took an ugly turn when, in a fit of rage, Munna attacked her with the weapon. He fled from the spot soon after committing the crime. The woman collapsed on the ground following the attack. Hearing her scream, some locals reached the spot and rescued her from a pool of blood.

Bharati was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack for treatment in critical condition. However, doctors at the government-run health facility declared her ‘dead’.

On being informed, CRRI police reached the spot and seized Bharati’s body and initiated a probe.

“The woman was alone at home when she was attacked,” a senior cop expressed.

“Accused Munna had one-sided love with the woman’s daughter. Both of them earlier indulged in verbal spats over the matter. Bharati had lodged an FIR with the police, and acting on which, the youth was arrested and jailed. He was recently released a few days ago,” the senior official stated.
