Tangi: A team of sleuths from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have thwarted the smuggling of gold weighing around 9,180 grams and seized the illegal cache of yellow metal following a raid carried out at Manguli toll plaza in Cuttack district. This was informed by the DRI officials today.

DRI arrested two persons in this connection and initiated a detailed probe into the incident.

Based on specific information regarding the movement of foreign-origin smuggled gold from Kolkata by car, DRI raided the toll plaza on the evening of March 28 leading to the seizure of a huge cache of gold.

While searching the vehicle, a total of 65 pieces of smuggled gold bullion valued at Rs 6,44,46,164 were recovered, which was ingeniously concealed in a cavity of the vehicle.

“Recovered gold along with vehicle were seized and two persons were arrested under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962. A detailed probe is underway,” a senior official of DRI expressed.

Notably, the destination where the smuggled gold was being taken has not been ascertained yet.
