Kathmandu: The heavy rains in Nepal have led to flash floods and landslides, resulting in the deaths of at least 14 people and leaving nine missing.
The neighbouring countries of India and Bangladesh have also been affected, with widespread damage and millions impacted. Nepalese police, along with other agencies and locals, are working to locate the missing individuals.
Monsoon rains from June to September are known to cause devastation in South Asia, and recent years have seen an increase in fatal floods and landslides. Experts attribute this to climate change and increased road construction.
The heavy rainfall in Nepal has led to warnings of flash floods, with reports of inundation in lowland areas bordering India. In India’s Assam state, flooding has caused six deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 58 since mid-May. Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, over two million people have been affected by the floods. The South Asian summer monsoon contributes to 70-80% of the region’s annual rainfall.
