India’s highest-ranked tennis player, Sumit Nagal, was defeated by Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in the pre-quarterfinals of the Braunschweig ATP Challenger on Wednesday.

Ranked 117th in the world, Cachin advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over the world number 73 Nagal, who was the second seed in the tournament.

Cachin, after a smooth first-set win, had the opportunity to seal the match when he broke Nagal’s serve to lead 5-4 in the second set.

However, Nagal, set to compete in the Paris Olympics, broke back to level the score at 5-5, only to lose his serve in the 11th game, giving Cachin a 6-5 advantage.

Cachin, who had been defeated by Rafael Nadal in the third round of the Madrid Masters earlier in April, made no errors this time and clinched the match in the second set’s 12th game.

Previously, Nagal had secured a win over Brazil’s Felipe Alves in the tournament’s opening round on clay.
